Under the Spotlight: Amelia Murray – understanding IPO

Our Under the Spotlight star this month is Amelia Murray…

She’s one half of insync K9, a dynamic dog training company with a background in protection work. Having recently relocated the business to Leicester with her partner, trainer Jon Gardner, Amelia has been making a name for herself in the world of competitive obedience for some time.

A dog trainer, obedience champion – and thoroughly lovely lass – in what little spare time she has, Amelia has set her sights on making waves in the world of sports too. Her passion is IPO (Internationale Prüfungs-Ordnung meaning ‘International Trial Rules’) formerly known as Schutzhund.

This three phase sport includes Tracking, Obedience and Protection. This dog saspenandhanneport was developed in Germany in the early 1900s as a breed suitability test for German Shepherds. Although still very much a sport that showcases the skills of German Shepherds and their handlers, it’s quickly becoming popular amongst other working breeds too. While this precision sport is still relatively new here in the UK, it’s attracting both men and women to the field. And it isn’t for the faint-hearted for those acting in the role of  ‘helper’, I know as Amelia allowed me to try-out in some of the Protection phase exercises. Having Aspen’s jaw wrapped around the arm pad was not only an awesome experience, it also highlighted to me the precision skills and teamwork required from dog, handler and helper.
